Primality 1 Day Workshop: London

1 Day Primality Workshop - Sat 18 Feb

Delivered by Darryl Edwards, founder of Fitness Explorer Training.

This one day workshop is an introduction to primal, natural movement and play.  A philosophy which I define as Primality.  Movement which is:

Playful, Restorative, Instinctive, Mindful, Adaptive, Life-giving, Integrative, Tactical and Youthful

The workshop is designed to improve real, practical movement skills that will assist you in performing everyday, recreational and extraordinary physical tasks more efficiently and effectively.

Informal discussion topics - will include:

What is (and isn't) Natural Movement?
The 25 Components of Fitness
Function vs Structure
Specificity vs Generality
Barefoot vs Footwear
The Duality of Fitness
Primal/Paleo Nutrition
Primal Programming and Recovery

Practical Participation - will include:

Locomotive Work & Play:- (bipedal and quadrupedal) movement drills and variations (including squatting, crawling, walking, running, sprinting, climbing, jumping)
Object Work & Play:- (including lifting, carrying, balancing, throwing)
Context Work & Play:- (social and imaginative)
No Equipment Required:- (individual and partner-based fitness)
Primal Work in the gym
 Isometric stability
Isomotion drills
After completion of this workshop you will have an understanding of natural movement and primal play and it's unique approach to improving your fitness, health and well-being.

This workshop is open to all, regardless of fitness level, age, gender or ability.

This workshop will be a 25% Theory, 75% Practical spread throughout the day.  Participation is actively encouraged for all physical activities but is of course optional.  We will scale activities and adapt training to suit individual participants.

Participants need to bring: water, lunch, clothing for outdoor work may be required (weather permitting) and an open-mind.

Nearest Tubes: Ravenscourt Park or Stamford Brook Tube Stations, free parking is also available.

News: An End to Play Time?

The previous UK government introduced a 235 Million Pound scheme to build children's playgrounds across the country.  I read in the London Evening Standard today that 3500 playgrounds were planned, (with 1300 due to be in place by 2011) but those plans have been shelved due to the current government scrapping the scheme as part of their budget cuts.

I personally benefit from one of these playgrounds for my own natural movement workouts (in Ravenscourt Park, London) and I see lots of children and families using and benefiting from the resources.  This playground was completed recently so was built prior to the cuts.

  Ravenscourt Park

Of course savings need to be made in certain areas.  But it is unfortunate that a short sighted cut, will not only jeopardise the only opportunity most of these children have to increase activity levels.  Playtime is not just about video games.

The true cost is society bearing the brunt of future child-related healthcare costs due to inactivity, a much greater cost to us all.

A real shame.

Fit at 50 - Merlene Ottey

Merlene Ottey

Yesterday, Merlene Ottey made history being the oldest athlete to compete in the European Athletic Championships at 50 years old.  She now runs for Slovenia, rather than her native Jamaica - participating with athletes in their prime, less than half her age!

Her chosen role was running the final leg (anchor) of the 4x100m sprint relay.  An even more remarkable achievement given it is 30 years since she competed at the 1980 Moscow Olympics winning a bronze medal.

She has clocked a 100m time of 11.50 seconds this year (a second slower than her personal best), looks fantastic at 50 and also wants to compete at the 2012 Olympics in London.  Although she is unlikely to be vying for medals in 2012 - I for one will be cheering her on.

"There are no limitations to age.  I'll always run.  It's the challenge that keeps me going" - Ottey

What an inspiration!
